The final step in creating your fabulous kitchen is to choose the finishes for what will certainly become the new favorite room in your family’s home. While each of the steps in the kitchen design process requires purposeful planning and thoughtful consideration, it is this step – the kitchen finishes - that often seems more complicated and challenging than the others. Kitchen finishes can include everything from:
- the color and material of a backsplash and
- your kitchen’s flooring, to
- lighting choices,
- hardware, and
- your island’s stools.
Two features of your kitchen where you should first focus on what finishes you want for them are your countertops and your cabinetry.
Often one of the first features noticed in a new kitchen are the countertops embracing the stove and the sink and on the room’s large island. This component of your kitchen is one of the biggest single items displaying your texture and color choices. Countertops can be made of granite, large-format tiles, composite materials, stainless steel, zinc, or natural wood. Choosing the same finish for the countertops under your cabinetry as the countertop on your island often adds a sense of natural flow and harmony to the space. When choosing the finish for this feature, careful consideration needs to be given to how the frequently-used countertops need to be to cleaned and maintained.
In addition to choosing the finishes for your countertops, another big item in your kitchen that is not only readily noticed upon entering the room, but also at eye level while you’re in the room is the kitchen’s cabinetry. By first selecting the finishes for the room’s cabinetry, you are easily setting the scene for the rest of the room's finishes to be in sync. Choosing the most durable, carefully-crafted, and high-quality cabinetry and finishes requires choosing products made by the most experienced, professional, and skilled cabinetmakers and joiners. There’s no shortcut around this. Don’t settle for second best when it comes to cabinetry; choose finishes that clearly reflect your style and your design preferences. Like the kitchen’s island where friends gather, and the countertops where cold food is prepped and hot food is placed, the kitchen’s cabinetry will be accessed and used countless times by countless people throughout the years.
By making the investment of time in choosing just the right finishes for your fabulous kitchen, you'll reap years of enjoyment preparing meals and entertaining in your new favorite room!
